Reasons I'm Great

My name is Jennie, and I would make a great new email fairy.

I love knitting and I love Ravelry. When I was a teenager the only poster I had up in my bedroom was the one that came free with Anna Zilborg's Socks for Sandals and Clogs. I walk around all day thinking about knitting or Ravelry.

I went to the University of Wisconsin and got a BS in Textile Design. For my thesis project I made up knitting designs from photographs. I always wanted to be a designer when I grew up. I took a bunch of art classes while I was in school and learned some other craftiness too. I can quilt, embroider, bead, weave, crochet, sew, and draw. But my heart still belongs to knitting.

After I graduated, I got a job at an After School Program for homeless and at-risk elementary school kids. This job has taught me patience, tact, and that I love helping people. Kids basically require you to be super positive, and I am, but sometimes I have to give people bad news.

I work with a team in my room (second and third grade), but also have some side projects I work on by myself. My boss keeps having to give me extra responsibilities because I work so well independently. Now I don't only deal with the particularly difficult kids in my room, but I do most of the bulletin boards and am in charge of all of the planning for a Healthy Self grant that we got last year.

It's a great job and I love my kids, but it's only about 18 hours a week. During the weekend, I work at my LYS, where I help teach people to knit (I teach beginning knitting both at the yarn store and the after school program). It's a great job because it keeps me up on all of the new yarns and patterns and I love knowing what everyone is knitting. I've learned so much there. It also makes my heart happy to be around all of the beautiful yarns and knitters.

I'm by no means a code monkey, but I'm an intuitive computer user and know my way pretty well around Ravelry. I'm sure there is more to learn, but I pick things up quickly and only have to be told how to do things once. I type fast and I read faster - you can count on my to reply to emails and answer questions with celerity. I'm also a big geek, and as you know, the geeks are extremely employable due to their obsessive attention to detail and love of planning.

I want to work for Ravelry because I have all of these mushy embarrassing feelings for it. I have never been big on networking type sites before, but Ravelry is a real community, with people who help each other out for no reason other than to be nice, and make real friendships. Also, I've known for a long time that I wanted to work in the knitting world. I just filled out a passport application last week, and under "Job" I started to put "Knitter." The color, the texture, the softness, taking a long piece of string and some sticks and waving your hands around to create something beautiful - knitting is my magic.

If I were a fiber, I would be wool. Versatile but traditional at the same time, springy and forgiving, and I do half the work for you without anyone even noticing. I'm also warm and waterproof.

AND I have not one but two cute little dogs! The black one is a little lady - the most trouble she gets in is when she occasionally helps me knit by tangling my yarn. The blond is a demon sent to punish me for wrongs in a former life, who has, in the past, expressed his displeasure with me by peeing in my yarn basket. And yet he has the eyes.

In short, I'm positive, peppy, tactful, work well by myself, catch on quickly, love Ravelry, and really want the job. I'd make a great member of Team Ravelry.
